Introduction
ACBI is usually used within specialist CAMHS services. It consists of three parts:-
- Consultation: the interplay between the ideas and expectations of the family and young person (CYP) and professional practice (Clinical assessment and formulation)
- Values focused intervention(s): taking into account the preferences and goals of the parent and CYP
- Brief work: either by intention, or by demand/capacity pressures

We found, in our research and from outcomes from clinical practice, that three sessions is often enough to bring about significant change.
The ACBI approach should be used by experienced clinical practitioners. It has a manual, proforma, adherence checklist, and training programme.
Managers and the service need to support implementation and sustainability of ACBI through provision of resources and a culture of brief work. Supervision and team work are essential components.
The theory of change within ACBI is drawn from different process based trans-diagnostic therapeutic approaches. These theoretical approaches have common features such as being person-centered, action focused, and values orientated.
